National Even Ages XC

The National Even Ages XC took place on Sunday in Dundalk IT. Thankfully the sun stayed out for the duration of the days proceedings. First off was the girls u12 race over 2000m with no fewer than 167 athletes. The course was relatively flat with a few steep hills thrown in for good measure, however the underfoot conditions were energy sapping to say the least. Vita O’Brien and Kate Naessens who have both been running for less than 12 months and in their first National Championships put in excellent performances with Vita coming home in 37th place and Kate 82nd. Vita was also the 4th scorer for Dublin team who won Intercounty silver medals. Next off were the boys u12 over the same distance, Joshua Ericson despite being with the leading pack from the off, took a nasty hit and suffered a fall and despite getting up and trying to continue unfortunately had to withdraw from the race with 800m to go. Oliver McQuaid was first of the Skerries boys home in 128th place followed Hugh Lawlor 135th, Joe May 140th, Lorcan Devine 143rd and Sean Emmett 155th. We had a wait of an hour or so before the next set of Skerries athletes took to the off in the girls u18/Junior combined race over 4000m. In the u18 race Isabel Carron was first of the girls home in 4th place followed by Laura Costello 36th, Eryn Devine 43rd, Aoimhe Downey 54th, Aine McCarthy 60th and Ellen Tuck 66th. Orla Bollard placed 23rd in the Junior girls race. Well done to all.

Well done Skerries AC u18 girls Dublin xc championships silver medallists

Joanna Hess

Very proud of this lady below. Joanna Hess contacted me 5 months ago with a personal best of 1hr 56 mins to her name but her running life time goal was to break 1:50 for the half marathon, with that she promised she’d happily retire. It wasn’t always easy trying to balance a very hectic life, married with 4 young children and running her own business left her pretty much always time poor and progress was initially slow. With patience and perseverance she finally broke 1:50 in the Rock N Roll Half last month with 1:49, lowering it further again to 1:48 in Athlone. Then a week later in the recent Dublin Half marathon she ran the race of her life with a very impressive 1:44.

Cross Country League 1 – Ardgillan

The first of the juvenile Cross Country leagues kicked off this morning in the spectacular surroundings of Ardgillan Demesne. It was fantastic to see so many of the various clubs athletes from all over Dublin out in force with numbers of around 80 from Skerries AC alone taking part. Each and every one of the kids ran their hearts out and they can all be very proud of their performances. Many thanks to all those who helped in any way, those who spent the past 2 days setting up the course, all the parents who helped warm up the children and ensure they were taken to the start line for their race and to those who marshalled the course. Your help as always is invaluable to the club.

Congrats to Rhona Pierce on winning the Junior race in the Ballymore Cobh Sonia O’Sullivan 3k yesterday evening. The club would also like to pay tribute to Rhona for having been an excellent ambassador for Skerries Athletic Club since joining at the age of 7, her dedication to training, her work ethic and her medal winning performances over the years have been truly inspirational to everyone in the club from younger members to coaches alike. We wish her the best of luck on her move to Cork and wish her every success with her new club, no doubt it won’t be the last we hear of her. We will all miss you very much Rhona and you will be welcomed back to the club with open arms anytime you visit.
