Santry 29th April 2017
League 2 kicked off early on a bitterly cold but dry Saturday morning in Santry Stadium. We had 43 athletes competing in various track and field events ranging from U10 to U16, some of these athletes competing in their first ever competition.
First up was Sam Burgess competing in the U/13 60m Hurdles and completed his race in a great time of 11 seconds. Next up, was the U/11 and U/12 Long Jump, all athletes performed amazingly, even though we have no long jump pit in Skerries. Each athlete had three jumps with their longest jump recorded.
This was followed by sprints and we had entries in all age groups with distances ranging from 60m U/10 to 100m U/16. The U/10 to U/12 sprints were run as heats, quarter finals, semi-finals and finals. Many of our athletes progressed to the semi- finals and finals, special mention must go to Emer Fanning 3rd U/10 60m, Luke Carr 3rd U/11 60m, Jake O’Hara 4th U/11 60m. Fantastic times were posted by our older athletes. The number of athletes in the sprints caused the schedule to be delayed by over 90 minutes but there were no complaints from the Skerries athletes, who were all in great form supporting each other.
During the sprints, we had U/10 and U/12 Turbo Javelin, again all athletes had three attempts at throwing with their longest throw being recorded. Everyone had a great time, even though numbers were high so it took time to get through the event. Coaches from the club helped out to speed up the event.
Once all the sprints were completed, it was time for the Longer Distance races. These ranged from 300m for U/10’s to 1,000m for U14 –U16. All these races were decided on times, again all our athletes posted very respectable times.
Congratulations to all the athletes who participated, especially those competing in their very first event.
Thanks to all the coaches for preparing the athletes and to the coaches who were present on Saturday. Thanks also to the parents for their support and encouragement and to Barbara, Michelle and Michael for officiating on the day.
Next League is Saturday 13th May in Tallaght, starting at 10.30am
Please find attached details of the event this weekend.
Congratulations to Ruby Pereira and Lottie Simons who represented Skerries AC in the National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone on Sunday. They were both competing in the U16 Girls 1500m.
Ruby came 7th with a time of 5:06.94, closely followed by Lottie in 8th with a time of 5:09.11.
Great result by both.
Skerries AC had an amazing weekend at the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena Abbotstown where Dublin Indoor Track Championships took place. Not sure who was most excited about the prospect of visiting the newly opened arena, our athletes or the parents & coaches.
The event kicked of with strong performances by our Sprinters, in the relays on Friday evening. The hard training (especially on cold nights at the track), certainly paid off. All were outstanding. Special mention must go to our U10 boys, whose team made it to the finals. They came a very respectable 5th.
Saturday kicked off with some of our older athletes. Again strong performances from all, but special mention to our medalists:- In the girls U16 1500m Ruby came first winning Gold closely followed by Lottie in 3rd winning Bronze. Eibhlin came 3rd winning Bronze in the girls U19 1500m. Despite a very late night on Friday, a lot of our young athletes returned on Saturday to participate in the sprints. Again all were outstanding many reaching the semi finals and finals, but a special mention has to go to Jake who came 1st winning Gold in the U11 boys 60m sprints.
We were represented on Sunday by some of our older athletes. A final medal collected by Conor coming 3rd in the boys U19 800m, winning Bronze.
Thanks to the parents for your ongoing support. Thanks also to all the coaches who worked so hard to prepared the athletes for the races. Most of all thanks to the athletes who participated. We are so proud of you all.
Good luck to all our athletes competing in The Dublin Indoor Championships at Abbotstown. The competition will take place in the Sport Ireland Indoor Arena at the National Sports Campus, Abbotstown. The arena is in the same complex as the Aquatic Centre, off the N3.

Athletes and spectators will not be given access to the facility until 6pm at the earliest on Friday evening and 9am on Saturday and Sunday.
Car Parking – Although there are almost 400 car park spaces there might be a need for the Campus Security staff to direct people to other car park areas in the vicinity of the arena. No cars should be parked on paving areas, on edge of kerb/footpaths or any other unauthorised areas. Allow plenty of time for parking as it is likely to be very busy.
Arena
On entering the facility everyone should either go up the steps to the seated area or standing area, or continue along the passageway on the left to the seated sections on the opposite side of the track. Turning right after entering the facility is not permitted.
There are designated toilet and shower/changing areas along the passageway under the fixed seating. Additional toilet areas are outside the entrance door to the track.
The Dublin County Board are expected to leave the facility in the same order we find it before competition. It is essential for athletes, coaches, parents and spectators/supporters to keep all areas clean of rubbish including toilet/changing areas, between seats and in the vicinity of the facility. Please use the available bins, if these become full, please bring your excess litter away with you.
Only officials and athletes will be permitted on the track and in field event areas. ONLY officials and athletes who are permitted at in advance of their event should be in the warm up area. Any unauthorised infringement may lead to an athlete or coach being disqualified.
Please arrive at least 90mins before the start of your race. This is to allow time to warm up and get your number. Don’t hesitate to contact your coach if you have any queries.
Have fun and enjoy the event, the new arena looks amazing. It’s sure to be a great experience for our young athletes.
Never mind the Nationals….the most competitive race in the Skerries AC calendar is always the Xmas cake run (for those athletes who train up in Ardgillan). Always hotly contested, with competitors handicapped the idea being all finishing at roughly the same time (Mmmm…)! It was a beautiful day for the run, with everyone in good spirits. Great to see our Chairperson Donna out for her maiden Xmas Cake Run. Conor led the senior athletes home, with Nicole winning the junior race. Mince pies and hot chocolate followed, to round off a great years training. Thanks to Joanne for organising. Enjoy your well deserved break!!!
A great night was had on 16th December when the whole club came together to celebrate the achievements of all Skerries AC athletes over the past 12 months. We recognised the achievements of athletes, some whom competed for the first time this year, and those who have trained with us for years and represented the club on many occasions. We also thanked our coaches for the time and commitment they give to the club in supporting our young athletes. We were delighted to welcome Ailis MacSweeney (our Sprint Coach and Irish 100m record holder) and Ciara Durkin (long time club member and European Cross Country Team Bronze Medalist) to present medals and awards to athletes. As well as presenting Dublin League awards, Dublin Cross Country Awards, and National Medals the following Club Annual Awards for 2016 were presented.
Best Girl Track Athlete – Ruby Pereira
Best Girl XC Athlete – Lottie Simons
Best Boy Track Athlete – Conor Tuck
Best Boy XC Athlete – Stephen O’Connor

WISHING YOU ALL A PEACEFUL BREAK OVER XMAS, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO A SUCCESSFUL YEAR OF ATHLETICS DURING 2017
A great day of athletics to be had on Sunday at the National Uneven XC and Novice Championships in Dundalk IT. The weather was mild, and fairly dry underfoot. Our U15 girls kicked off for the club. Lottie had her best run of the season to lead the team home (14th overall) followed by strong performances from Ruby (26th), Lily (58th), Ella (112th) and Kerrie (114th). As a team they came 7th, but Lottie and Ruby also qualified as part of the Bronze winning Dublin County team.
Next up were the U17 girls. Again strong performances from Anna (59th) and Mairead (77th). Anna also qualified as part of the Silver winning Dublin County team.
Stephen followed in the U17 boys. He had the misfortune of losing a shoe early in the race, so under the circumstances finished a very credible 104th (I believe racing with one shoe is a specialty of his).
After a tough year due to injury it was great to see Isabel racing again, finishing 7th in the U19 girls. An incredible achievement for first race back.
Sad to see Orla B pull out of the Novice race due to injury. Fingers crossed nothing too serious.
It is an incredible achievement to qualify for the Nationals so well done to all, Skerries AC is so proud of you all. Also to Eibhlin who qualified, but couldn’t compete due to illness.
Thanks as always to the coaches, for their hardwork on the day, but also in preparing the athletes to reach the Nationals, and for the parents and their ongoing support.
