Happy Christmas 🎄☃️🎅🏼

Hard to believe but Training has finished until 2019.

Congratulations to Shauna, Lottie and John who did not allow Storm Deirdre to deter them from competing in the National Uneven Age Cross Country Championships in Navan on Saturday.

All put in great performances under very tough conditions, with Shauna stepping up an age group to U/13’s. Lottie was the 6th scorer in 39th place helping the Dublin team secure gold in the County competition. John had an amazing race finishing in 8th position in the individual race and was 2nd team scorer for Dublin securing a silver medal for Dublin County team and a bronze medal for Dublin province team.

The Senior groups joined by the Sprint Group finished up with the annual Christmas cake run in Ardgillan on Sunday. As always a hotly contested competition with Nathan, Aoife and Shauna battling out for the first cake, Aoife just taking it on the line.

Another sprint finish for the older group with Philip just beating Josh.

Thanks so much to Joanne for organising and as always supplying the beautiful cakes. Thanks to the parents who supported and brought cakes, treats and hot chocolate, (including the Ericson & Fanning families for the warm sausages, and Nathan for his amazing healthy (at least that’s what I’m telling myself 😉) brownies.

Thanks to the coaches and committee members for all you do for our athletes during the year, the parents for your ongoing support and of course the athletes whose hard work and commitment make it all worth while.

Have a good break. Wishing you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas. Look forward to seeing you all back at training in the New Year.

Annual Awards Evening

Friday night saw all Skerries Athletic Club’s training groups, coaches and parents/guardians come together to celebrate what has been another great year for our athletes. The achievements of all our athletes were recognised and acknowledged whether it was at their training sessions, races or a combination of both.

Some of our athletes are in their first year with Skerries AC which we hope is the start of a long enjoyable journey. Huge thanks were passed on to our coaches for the time and commitment they give to the club in supporting our athletes and parents for their continued support. Thanks was also given to our committee for their commitment, time and hard work throughout the year in supporting our coaches/athletes and organising our social/fundraising events.

We were delighted to welcome Ciara Durkan (long time member of the Club and successful Irish athlete) to present the Club Awards to our athletes.

Proceedings kicked off with a small presentation to a long time member of the committee who stepped down earlier this year Joanne Carron. We would like to thank Joanne for all her years on the committee, thankfully she is remaining with us as a coach.

Participation medals were awarded to our Junior athletes (Indoor and Astro) in recognition of their hard work at training in all weathers throughout the year. Next up were the Dublin League, Dublin Championship and National Championship medals of which were in abundance down to the fantastic runs by our athletes throughout the year. These medals represented the Clubs success in both Cross Country and Track races, over distances varying from 60m up to 6,000m. (The recent XC League medals were not available but the athletes achievements were recognised … hence the reason for no medals in their photos).

The Club Annual Awards for 2018 were presented to

Dublin Even Age XC Championships and Autumn Open

The Dublin Even Age XC Championships took place in a cold damp Abbottstown on Sunday morning, with athletes competing from U/10 to U/18. The Dublin Championships is always a big step up in standard compared to the Cross Country Leagues, with the championships providing an opportunity for our athletes to qualify for the National Cross Country Championships in November. As always, our athletes did their club, coaches, families and more importantly themselves proud.

The morning started with our U/10 boys, Conor C 14th, Conor D 29th and Michael 47th. The Conor’s were treated to a trip to Krispy Kreme on their way home to restore their sugar levels.

The remainder of the races had our athletes hunting National qualification:

U12 Girls : Shauna 5th, Aoife 10th, Isobel 20th & Ava 48th and the team placed 4th overall

U12 Boys : Ben 11th

U14 Boys : Nathan 26th

U16 Girls : Emma 12th

U18 Girls : Lottie 4th and Kerrie 15th.

Following the Dublin Juvenile Championships in the morning, it was the turn of our Junior and Senior athletes, with Eibhlin competing in the Junior race and Orla in the Senior race. Both ran very well putting in solid performances in strongly competitive fields.

Thanks as always to the coaches for preparing the athletes for the competition and to those who were there to give that final bit of guidance and support. To all the parents who came to support, particularly to Chris, Liam & Michelle who acted as officials on behalf of the Club.

Congratulations to all our fabulous athletes.

Rathfarnham 5k

Congratulations to Orla B and Ciara who competed in the Rathfarnham 5k this morning. So good to see Orla and Ciara back in action. Well done to Ciara who was 2nd senior woman home in 16:51.

Dublin XC League 1

Congratulations to all our athletes on their great performances on Sunday in the first race of the cross country season. The race (which we co-hosted with our neighbours Lusk AC and LSA) was held in the amazing setting of Newbridge House, Donabate in fabulous sunshine.

A special mention to some of our younger athletes who were competing in their first cross country race and for others in their first race for Skerries AC.

Check out the photographs (courtesy of Michael and some of the parents – more on Facebook) which show a combination of determination and enjoyment from all our athletes. The coaches are very proud of all your efforts.

Thanks to the parents who acted as stewards this morning and to all our coaches for preparing our athletes. Without all our fantastic volunteers from Skerries AC, other clubs and Dublin Athletics Board, these events could not be held.

If your child is available to take part please let your coaches know by Wednesday 12th at the latest, as we need to allocate race numbers to each athlete and send it to the Dublin Board of Athletics.
This is a fantastic event on the Dublin Cross Country calendar and a great chance to show case what a super club we have. As with all events we need volunteers and are putting out a call for help on the day.  Help is needed from 10am to 1pm (races start at 11am) and it will be primarily to help maintain the race course, ensure that the athletes follow the correct course and ensure that the track is kept clear of spectators.
If you feel that you can help us out on the day can you please let Ruth or Liz know and if you have a high visibility vest please bring it along on the day. We will have some for those that haven’t got one.
Best wishes to all our athletes as we start the Cross Coutry season.

6 Days of Sizzling Racing

As the weather heated up over the last 6 days so did the racing by Skerries AC athletes young and old.  First up was John Fanning competing for his school Blackrock College in the 1500m Steeplechase at the Tailteann Games. The Games were held in the Morton Stadium, Santry on Saturday June 23rd . John ran a superb tactical race to win the race and secure his selection for the Irish Team that will compete in the SIAB Track and Field Championship, Grangemouth Stadium, Scotland on July 21st.  We wish john the best of luck in Scotland.

Next up that evening were our Masters competing in the Dunsaughlin 10K, conditions were hot but so was the racing with David, Keith and Kevin finishing in times of 37.16, 36.22 & 35.30 respectively in what was a very competitive 10K field. As the temperatures got progressively hotter as the days went by, Dunsaughlin proved to be only the warm up race for some of our Masters. Keith and Kevin were back in action 5 days later on July 28th to compete in the Docklands 5K. As weather temperatures peaked, this time would be different with the cool racing head of Olive joining Keith and Kevin to compete as a mixed team in the race. The Team came in 3rd in the mixed team category out of 38 teams. Although that did not tell the whole story as the individual results were to yet to be declared. They did not disappoint with Olive first in her age category in a time of 21.28 with Keith and Kevin both second in their categories with times of 17.35 & 17.12 respectively. The cool presence of Olive had worked wonders in what was an arena of hot competitive racing. With only 6 days into our mini heat wave what will the rest of the summer bring for our young and old athletes!

Thanks to Orla and Brenda for support and photos.

Dublin Track & Field Championships – Day 6

A sunny though at times blustery evening at Santry. Lottie and Kerrie in the 1500 metres and Ruby there for support. Also warmed the girls up! I was an “official” so on the inside of the track cheering our girls on , totally unbiased of course. They ran the U16 U17 together. Pack of about 10 first 2 laps and then Lottie decided to take it on just before the bell. Worked hard but pipped round the last bend. Tells me felt relaxed and had a bit in the tank so why not! Kerrie also ran well and was strong throughout the race. So off to the nationals (twice) in July we go! And no Kevin I didnt get her time! I cant multi-task! (By Greg)

Thanks to all the coaches preparing the athletes for the races, Greg for acting as official on the night, photos & report. Well done Kerrie & Lottie.

Next up Nationals in July where Skerries AC will be represented in 8 different events.
