Xmas Cake Run Results

Well done to all who braved the cold to compete in the Xmas Cake Run last Sunday. A great morning as always. Congratulations to Aoife who won the cake in the younger group and Shauna the runner up, and Lorcan who lead home the older athletes closely followed by Josh. Thanks as always to Joanne for organising the prizes. Well done to all the athletes who put in so much hard work all year round. Thanks to the parents for supporting and supplying much needed sweet treats and hot chocolate for afterwards. Especially Pam for the hot sausages (which has to become a tradition). Finally the coaches, for always being there to encourage and support.

Xmas Cake Run

Yes it’s that time of year…

…the most competitive race on the Skerries AC calendar THE XMAS CAKE RUN in Ardgillan this Sunday (10th Dec) 10.00 sharp. Meet in usual place by the bench. All the athletes who usually train in Ardgillan are invited to battle it out for one of Joanne’s Cakes. We then meet up in the top field (by the car park) for Hot Chocolate and Treats. Parents please bring a flask of hot chocolate, a few mince pies, cakes etc for our hardworking Athletes (and Coaches). Athletes dress appropriately for the weather, and plenty of warm clothes for after the race. Obviously Xmas hats essential.

See you there…

Dublin Juvenile XC League 3

A cold damp start did nothing to curb the enthusiasm of our athletes this weekend. The venue was Tymon Park for the last round of the Dublin Cross Country League. A very strong turnout of our junior athletes created a great atmosphere at the startline. A team walk of the course showed that conditions were very heavy under foot and with plenty of mud and undulating terrain this was going to be a real cross country course.

First up the u9 girl’s with Keren and Holly competing. A fast start down into a tight bend meant that the field was quickly strung out. Keren showed her experience by timing a late burst to finish 5th, making up a lot of places in the last 60 metres. Holly coped well with the difficult conditions but unfortunately couldn’t complete the course after she got an elbow in the tummy, which winded her.

A big turnout in the u9 boys with Conor D, Conor C, Jamie, Dylan, Theo and Michael. Jamie made the early running with an electric paced start through the downhill. 400 metres in Dylan made his move. He forsook the high ground, dropping down into the off camber bank and sprinted to the head of the pack. Across the tough uphill finish he managed to hold onto most of the places, finishing very strongly in 7th. Dylan was closely followed by the rest of the guys with all finishing in the top 20. Next up was Aisling in the u10 girls. She showed excellent tenacity over the heavy course, finishing very strongly on the uphill.

Another big turnout in the u10 boys with Ben, James, Joseph, Kyle and Joe. Ben maintained the strong form that he has shown all season timing a good late move and finishing 7th. The rest of the guys were hot on his heels. Shauna was the sole Skerries participant in the u11 girls. Like Ben she maintained her excellent form and finished 6th.

With no U11 boys this week next up were the u12 girls. After an excellent start, the wheels almost literally came off for Keva as she lost a shoe in the deep mud. Not to be put off, she carried on with just one shoe. An early break by Laura was reeled in by Nicole and there was nothing to separate them on the line. They were quickly followed by Aoife and Ailbhe and just behind them was the one shoed Keva, who got a big cheer from the crowd.

Cillian and Darragh ran in the u12s and finished very strongly. Cillian had to fend off some very vigorous elbowing from an opponent as the jostled in the finishing straight. Cillian stayed strong and prevailed.

Altan ran in the u14s finishing 9th. The u15 and u16 boys races were amalgamated so Skerries had three athletes to cheer for with Ben, Joshua and Conal running. Joshua finished an excellent 3rd, with the other two finishing strongly well inside the pack. It was a long day of standing around for Anna before she ran in the u17 girls, the last race of the day, Anna finished strongly in 5th place.

The coaches were really pleased with the big turnout on such a miserable morning. Spirits were high as a result of the team support and this translated into some excellent running. We would like to thank the parents for their support this morning and all the way through the season

Thanks as always to the coaches for preparing the athletes and to those who were there on the day to give last minute advice and support.  Thanks to Michael for a fantastic summary of the day and photos.

National Cross Country Senior, Junior and Even Age Juvenile XC Championships – Abbotstown

Huge congratulations to all our athletes who competed in today’s National XC Championships.

First up for the club were Shauna and Aoife in the Girls U12 Race. In a very strong field Shauna came 32nd (6th Dublin Team member home), shortly followed by Aoife. Very strong performance by these two athletes in their first National Championship.

Next up for the club was Lorcan in the Boys U14. Again a good performance in a strong field.

Lottie ran well in the Girls U16, despite a stitch in the latter part of the race.

John ran a phenomenal race in the Boys U16. He battled hard in the lead pack, eventually finishing 6th.

Mairead had a good run in the U18 Girls which was combined with the U20 Girls, and of a very high standard.

Last Athlete up for the club was Ciara in the senior Women’s race. By now conditions were deteriorating. Very cold and drizzly, with the course well churned up from earlier races. Ciara pushed hard from the start and was with lead group the whole way. She finished a strong 6th in a high calibre field containing Irish Olympians.

Thanks as always to the coaches for preparing the athletes, and to those who turned up today to support and encourage them. For the parents who battled long queues of traffic to get their children to the race, and their on going support. Finally to all our athletes who competed, we are so proud of you all. It is a phenomenal achievement to make it to National level.

From the Goats to the Wolfpack

For those of you who don’t know one of our athletes, Isabel Carron was awarded a full athletic scholarship to North Carolina State University. North Carolina has one of the best women collegiate XC teams in the US, currently ranked 5th. To be accepted into such a programme it is a testament to Isabel’s athletic achievements, which include:-

  • Gold at the 2015 Irish National Championships, winning the 3K
  • 2x Irish Junior National Champion in the 5,000m (2014, 15)
  • 2x Irish Schools Champion in the 3,000m (2013, 14)
  • Competed for Ireland at Schools International level both on the Track and XC
  • Competed for the Irish National Junior XC team from 2014-15 (at European XC Championships)

However to obtain a scholarship a high academic level is also required, which Isabel more than achieved with her outstanding leaving cert results.

Isabel started at the college in August, and has settled in well to her new academic and training environment, and we look forward to catching up with her at Christmas.

Dublin Juvenile Uneven Ages XC Championships Santry

The Dublin Juvenile Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships took place in Santry Demense on Sunday morning, with athletes competing from U/9 upwards. The Dublin Championships is always a big step up in standard compared to the Cross Country Leagues, with the Championships providing an opportunity for our athletes from U11 upwards to qualify for the National Cross Country Championships in Waterford on the 17th of December.

As always all our athletes did the Club very proud performing very well. Up first were our U9 boys Conor D, Conor C & Michael competing in their first Dublin Championships, all three boys finishing well within the top half of a very competitive field. Next up was Keren in the U9 girls finishing in an amazing 4th place. It should be mentioned that these athletes are currently members of our Indoor Group and wouldn’t be doing much distance training. Thanks to Michael for taking care of our athletes on the day, who is very proud of you as you all continue to make huge improvements with every race.

Next up we had our older athletes chasing National Championship Qualification places with the following securing their selection : U11 girls, Shauna 4th and Aoife 5th (backing up their performances of a fortnight ago); U15 Boys : Josh 12th and the U15 boys team (Josh, Lorcan, Hugh & Alton) coming in 3rd; U17 Girls Lottie 5th & Ruby 6th (again backing up their performances of a forthnight ago) and the U17 girls team (Lottie, Ruby, Anna & Kerrie) coming in 3rd.

Following the competion of the Juvenile races, it was the turn of the Senior Athletes. Huge congratulations to Ciara Durkan on winning the Jim McNamara Perpetual Cup, and securing the county title for the Senior Womens’ 6,000m in a time of 20min 27sec. Last but not least was Kevin running in the Senior Men’s 10,000m in a time of 35 min 14 sec.

Thanks as always to the coaches for preparing the athletes and to those who were there on the day to give last minute advice and support. To all the parents for their support and of course to all our athletes who work so hard at training and who represent the club so well at all times.

Dublin Marathon

Congratulations to the coaches who competed in the Dublin Marathon today. Outstanding performances by David, Treabhor and Niamh. It’s great for our young athletes to have such role models.

To all our young athletes enjoy the rest of midterm. Have fun but stay safe over Halloween. 🎃🎃🎃
