Dublin T & F Championships Day 3 & 4

10th June 2016 Santry & 11th June 2016 Irishtown

The 2016 Dublin Juvenile Track and Field Championships drew to a conclusion on Friday evening June 10th and Saturday morning June 11th. On Friday evening the scene was set yet again for more intense competition to be only cooled somewhat by the rain.

Our club has a strong tradition in middle and endurance events with this tradition coming to the fore again as our athletes competed in the 1500m across a variety of ages on the Friday evening. The standard in all 1500m races was high and all our athletes must be given credit and take pride in the way they competed on the night giving it their all, fighting hard for their club and for themselves. The following athletes managed to medal on the night; Lottie & Ruby getting a silver and bronze medal respectively and running PB’s in what was a very hotly contested girls U/15 1500m race, followed by Sive who got a bronze medal in the u/19 1500m race. All have booked their place for the upcoming nationals when they will take to the track in Tullamore. Another Skerries athlete who booked his place on the night for the nationals was Conor, finishing 4th in the U/18 1500m and running another PB following his success in the 800m the previous week.

Unfinished work

No sooner had Friday’s night events concluded and our athletes were back early morning in Irishtown Track to compete in events over 400m & 200m. Our club may have a strong tradition in endurance, however with our new sprint programme launched this year under the careful guidance of Ailis, our sprint athletes held their own in what were very competitive races. Orla and Kerry toed the line with each of them flying out of the blocks (yes we now know how to use blocks) over 400m and 200m respectively, followed by Josh who made it out of his heat to finish 5th in his 200m final.

This brought the clubs Dublin championship campaign to an end, however the abiding memory is how all our athletes competed, giving it their all, however more importantly how they all supported each other, if they were not competing they were shouting from the side of the track providing encouragement to their team mates. Special thanks must also go to our coaches in preparing all our athletes for the championships and to parents who helped out at each days competition.

Well Done Laura, Orla & Keith

It’s not just the Dublin T & F Championships that have been keeping our athletes busy.

Laura Fagan has just competed and won her first park run in Rush. Well done Laura, all that hard work in Ardgillan is paying off.

Orla Bollard competed in the 1500m at the 4th Dublin graded meet. She ran a determined race, winning the race in 4.59.55, setting a new PB.

Also special mention to Keith, who having taken the training session with our Athletes in ALSAA, rushed to Santry to support Orla, and  compete in the 1500m finishing 5th in a very competitive field.

Dublin T & F Championships Day 2

5th June 2016 – Tallaght

“OH WHAT A DAY!”

Well off I set with John Lawlor, Hugh + Lottie and a lovely car journey it was too. Smooth journey on the M50 and I was surprised when pulling down the window it was a windee down and not electric, cheered me up no end!

It’s the little things isn’t it!

Weather report you ask – one word – glorious!

Now forgive me if I don’t get everyone’s individual performances but it’s safe to say a couple of things were learnt at the end of the day.

1)      Great to see so many athletes putting on a Skerries Vest, all did the club proud

2)      Enjoy, racing is about having fun!

Who did what?  Well my competitors were as follows:

Daphney, Daisy, Ellie, Lorcan, Phillip, Mark, Ben, Josh, Hugh, Conall, Ella, Naomi, Lottie, Ruby, Kerrie and Stephen.

They ran sprints and long distance, all ran well and some even made the finals in Tullamore.

Two lads get a special mention.

Conall who literally left everything out on the track, first 800m and I know he will never forget it! Some achievement Conall! Thanks to Conall’s Dad for getting him thru post-race too.

And to Stephen O’Connor who had to hang around the longest for his 3000 metres, finishing 4th to qualify for the Nationals in Tullamore.

Thanks to Tallaght AC, to the parents (the easy bit – cheering), the kids (hard bit – racing) and thanks also to John Lawlor who volunteered to rake the sand pit. Lovely straight lines and no sand castles!

Dublin T & F Championships Day 1

3rd June 2016 – Santry

The first part of the juvenile Dublin track championships was held in Santry on Friday evening, the evening was hot as were the races. First up for Skerries AC was our U/10 girls racing over 500m with Shauna, Jessica & Aoise committing 110% and setting the standard for the other Skerries athletes to follow. Our U/10 boys then threw themselves into the race and were not afraid to take it out from the gun.

The temperature continued to rise as did the distances with the race schedule moving on to the boys & girls U/11  to U/13  racing over 600m. Every place was fought for and our athletes did not give an inch as they flew around the track in the blue and white colours of the club.

As the racing programme drew to a close the weather began to cool however with two remaining athletes left to compete at under U/17 & U/18 over 800m the club got its first medal of the championship with Conor in a stacked field taking the silver medal and running a PB to boot!

Well done to all and we wish the best of luck to our athletes competing on Sunday for round two of the championships.

End of Season for Hall & Astro Groups

The sun shone on our young athletes on Friday night, as they rounded off a great season of athletics, with a fun night at the Community Centre. Our athletes showed off their multi disciplinary talents with the Tug of War; Relay Races that involved dragging tyres, carrying weights, jumping in sacks, zig zagging round obstacles; Turbo Javelin throwing; and of course lots of running. We may have a few decathletes in the making! Thanks to all the coaches for organising such a fun evening. Have a great summer holiday. See you all in September.

News From Greg

League 4 at Santry so I picked up me pal Altan (new spikes – thank-you Breen) and off we went. 11am meet as the hurdles were at 10.30 and none of me troops wanted to try them out. Especially Breen who replied when I asked him “Greg I’m a sprint man none of that hurdles lark for me!” A young man who knows his strengths and weaknesses! Wish I was 14 again!

Registration and I got meself me stickers. Slight panic as Marie and her girls were not here?  Panic over as Keva came down to me and all three were up in the stands. Marie is Skerries AC No1 fan and she takes a mean picture!  (see attached)

The weather you ask, well started off sunny and showers throughout the day. Quite warm in the stands for a change.

Sprints first. Nicole and Keva, great pals’ great sprinters. Speedy with great times. 60 metres went in a flash!

Daphney up next, little further 80 metres. Walked her down to start, quick pep talk and she was at the line! Boom! made the final no bother!

The U14 sprints came up really quickly and nearly forgot about Naomi! She went to the start on her own and used the blocks. Well impressed! Great run too.

Ben next (who showed me how to set up his blocks!) he flew out of them and finished well. I see him as a sprinter, powerful, good action, but you are not getting out of the Ardgillan runs Ben! Thanks Mr Ben for taking photo’s (see attached).

Long Distance

Keva, get your 3 Euro worth says me, so she ran in the 400m and Daphney in the 500m both doubling up. Keva came in about 12th and Daphney came second – well done girls that’s value for money!

Lorcan, well to be honest I missed the long distances as I had to see a man about a dog but my co-coach John said “what a run” twice so it must have been good. Strolled in 1st and not a bead of sweat! Rio still a bit too early for him but Olympics maybe one day.

Altan came in 7th which was half decent too. This lad runs with a smile on his face. He lit up the track on Saturday both in his 80 metres and long distance. Look after them spikes sir!

Hugh and Ben ran well, not put off by running with the girl U16’s and in atrocious conditions, yes the heavens did open!

Lastly thanks to all the kids (they do the hard bit) the mum’s and dad’s (the easy bit- the cheering) and fellow coaches Sébastien (photos too), Ide, Martina, John and all officials at Santry who give their time for the love of the sport.

We all love the sport too!

 Coach Greg

Recovery

Recovery is without a doubt the most important part of training. When we run, we tear muscle fibres in our body so it is therefore EXTREMELY important to have a recovery snack 20-30 minutes directly after exercise, this is called the ‘Window of Opportunity’ and if we miss that window, our body will take longer to recover.
For this snack try to include a protein source and a complex carbohydrate source.
Here are a few ideas of a snack directly after training :
1. A super smoothie- 1 scoop whey protein, 1 banana, 1 yoghurt, 1 tbsp of peanut butter, a handful of raspberries and a few drops of water, blend and enjoy!
2. Greek yoghurt, some homemade granola and berries.
3. A banana topped with peanut butter.
4. Scrambled egg on wholewheat toast.

Clonliffe Harriers Juvenile Open Sports

15th May 2016

Our younger athletes were blessed with glorious weather for their latest trip to the Morton Stadium for the inaugural Clonliffe Harriers Juvenile Open Sports event. All our athletes performed superbly, with plenty of medals coming home to Skerries. The club always performs well on the track, but it has been great this season to see athletes trying some of the field events. We have seen success in the Turbo Javelin in the Leagues, and on Sunday in the Long Jump. Thanks to all the coaches who were there to assist the athletes on the day, the parents for their support, our friends at Clonliffe for putting on such a great event, and obviously our athletes for their outstanding performances.
